EnviroNet” is a Web-based application for location-aware (e.g. GPS enabled) mobile phones and devices. It allows people to attach or to search for digital data that is relevant to their own community and which is linked to physical locations.

Users can ‘search’ for data by inputting their community’s descriptor or by using keywords. Leaving the application running on their mobile device, it alerts them when they pass a relevant ‘tagged’ location. Users can also upload data by ‘tagging’ specific locations, adding their own messages, keywords and community descriptors to the system, to be subsequently shared with other users.

EnviroNet is ultimately intended to create multi-layered community networks in which digital media is superimposed over an urban area. Our aim is to enrich and enhance peoples’ experience of their environment, as well as to assist newcomers to various communities. We also envisage EnviroNet helping to educate the many different types of people that inhabit the urban environment about each other.
